Potters’ Family
The ceramic workshop under the name Atsonios is one of the most historic and traditional pottery workshops in Sifnos, based in Vathy.
It was founded in 1870 and continues to this day to create handmade ceramics of high quality and aesthetic value.
In Vathy, Sifnos—where earth meets fire and water—the Atsonios family has been continuously practicing the art of traditional pottery to this day.
19th century
In distant 1870, a visionary man from Sifnos, Giannis Atsonios, purchased a pottery workshop that was already operating on Tsopos beach in Vathy.
He himself was not a potter, but his son, young Giakoumis, with love, sensitivity, and vision, was destined to build a strong ceramic tradition there—one that endured through time despite various hardships.
The torch was passed to Giannis Atsonios, who continued the tradition with passion and respect during a time when pottery—especially cooking-related items—was a basic necessity of daily life.
Many of the items he created are still preserved in the workshop, showcasing the unmatched artistry of grandfather Giannis.
Each one is a work of art that carries the island’s history, the family’s love for ceramics, and the personal signature of the creator.
• Antonis Atsonios, son of Giannis, developed the workshop further, maintaining the traditional kiln in the “Tsopos” location and creating ceramics of unparalleled aesthetic quality.
Master Antonis undertook—and with the active participation of his son Giannis successfully completed—the challenging task of transitioning into a new era, without neglecting any elements of tradition.
1870 - today
Four generations—Giakoumis, Giannis, Antonis, and today the younger Giannis—have dedicated their lives to crafting ceramics that bear the mark of Sifnian authenticity.
Today, we continue with the same passion, creating pieces that carry the memories, colors, and textures of our island.
